Always have a back-up plan.

After a two-hour podcast recording with the team, I sat back to review the audio.

But there was a problem: There was no audio.

When I realized this, I honestly came close to knocking my computer to the floor in frustration. TWO HOURS of Podcast-Gold, lost in the ether of the internet...

The topic of discussion (which will remain a secret for now) inspired some pretty animated discussion. Some inspired points were presented, and there were quite a few unplanned moments of humor. I'd like to try to record the session again in the near future...

In the meantime, I present ep. 24 mk.2.

ASSURGAM. Seeing the word featured on the Nightwatch Heavy Bramble led me to google it. Turns out the phrase is identified with the US Army's 626th Brigade Support Battalion, and translates roughly as "We Rise Up". Pretty cool, no?

Welcome to episode 20 of the threeA radio podcast, the internet's first podcast dedicated to 3A.

To start things off, a little primer:

What's threeA? It's a designer toy company created by artist Ashley Wood and famed toy designer Kim Fung Wong.

What are designer toys? Well, some think of them as pieces of 3-d art, prized by many for their unique and innovative combination of color and style. The pieces created by threeA have that, plus, they're just plain fun to mess around with!

And threeA is more than just a toy company. Over the years, a unique community of fans called the threeA Legion has grown around the brand.

Fans come for the cool toys, and stay for the cool people.

In this podcast, some freinds and I get together to talk about the different toys produced by threeA, as well as the gear, books, and art created by threeA and artist Ashley Wood.

This episode starts off with a quick trip to a little place called "The Emo Zone".

Yeah, I know it's been a while since the last episode. But rest assured, the podcast is alive and well. Because of the time involved in editing each episode, and because of the inevitable delays that Real Life imposes on the production of the podcast, I've been working on building a cushion of episodes to have on hand & ready to drop. The plan is to have at least 2 episodes already done by the time the team & I get together to record a new one. That way, I can have an episode ready to go while I'm editing the latest recording.

As of today, the last episode to drop was number 19. I'm currently finishing up the editing on episode 21. So while there has been a bit of a lag since the last episode, HOPEFULLY, future shows will drop more regularly and more frequently.

Anyway, thanks to everyone out there who has been checking out the podcast; your support is GREATLY appreciated.

One of the biggest surprises at the convention was the unveiling of some 1/12 scale Star Wars figure prototypes created by threeA. Devours and Chasbrock join me for some discussion on the prototypes and what we'd like to see from this exciting potential new line of high-end Star Wars figures.

3A "Action Portable" Stormtrooper Prototype

This episode also features another edition of threeA THUNDERDOME. In honor of the Star Wars figure unveiling, this edition of Thunderdome is Star Wars themed. Listen on as Devours and Chasbrock battle it out in the Star Wars trivia arena.

Several Convention Exclusive threeA toys were available at the con. These things were HARD to get, but I managed to grab one of the Action Portable Ascended Popbot figures. The opening of the figure and my initial impressions are presented here as sort of an impromptu unboxing and figure review.

In this episode, the team and I get together minutes before the recent JDF Armstrong drop. A limited quantity of the figures were offered on Bambaland, with all proceeds going towards a relief fund for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami which struck Japan late last month.

When I first glanced at this photo, I thought "cool; that's a nice picture of the 12-inch Commando Uncle 5 Dropcloth.

Only it isn't.

This is a 6-inch Commando Uncle 5 Dropcloth!!!

6 inches tall, and capturing every last detail of its 12 inch tall brother, right down to the tiny articulated fingers!

If you've opened a new threeA figure before, you're probably familiar with the distinct "threeA smell." With the way my hunger for these things is growing, I'm starting to suspect that the smell is at least 15% crack. Or maybe nicotine.

Eric, I love the new podcast can you tell us a bit more about it. How did you get started?
The podcast started with an idea I threw out on the old threeA Legion forum. I'd had a few beers that night, so the little voice telling me it was a silly idea was out of commission. Surprisingly, response to the idea was overwhelmingly positive. I think what sealed the deal for me was when Ashley chimed in and said "Do it!"

So Eric how long does it usually take to produce a episode?
Gathering the material is pretty simple; the hard part is the editing. When recording a conversation with other threeA fans, it's easy to get caught up in the moment and drift off topic. Listening, then re-listening to the recordings and deciding what to prune is where the minutes start to turn into hours. Sometimes, the recordings turn out perfect as-is; other times, it takes a little work. A thirty minute segment can take up to 2 hours of work to clean up.

So how has the experience changed so far as you've produced it? Do you have any future plans for where your gonna take the show?
The podcast is still a baby; it's finally learned to walk but it isn't running yet. Producing it has changed in many ways as the show has evolved, but the biggest change has been deciding on a set format for each episode. Ever since cracking that nut, putting the episodes together has gotten a TON easier.

I'm also learning how to more effectively use my recording/mixing software with each episode. The program I use is a freeware program called Audacity. It is surprisingly flexible, and has a ton of cool bells & whistles. The hard part has been finding out where those bells & whistles are, and how to use them.

As for the future, I'd like to eventually earn the assistance of some regular contributors. I'd also like to eventually find a regular co-host. I could go on and on for hours talking about different threeA toys and Ashley Wood comics by myself, but I think it's more entertaining for listeners to hear two or more people discuss a topic.

Do you know if Ashley Wood has listened to it yet?
Dude, I have no idea! I'd like to think that he has, and that he approves of the show, but I haven't asked him yet. I have the utmost respect for Ashley Wood; his accomplishments as both an artist and a businessman are frankly astounding. Not only that, but he seems like a genuine, down to earth good guy. But in the end, I'm not doing the podcast for him. I'm doing it for his fans.

Any plans on trying to get Ashley on?
Not yet. Gotta learn to walk before I try to run. (LOL) Earlier, I referred to the podcast as still being in its infancy. Having Ash on now would be like turning the podcast into a child-star! And child-stars don't tend to end up well.

Also, having him on would be the ULTIMATE; I feel like there would be nowhere to go after that but downhill. However; with that being said, I'd jump at the chance to have him on the show. I'm just not going to push it yet.

Is there anything you really want to cover on the podcast but haven't yet?
TONS. What springs to mind right off the bat is an idea presented to me by Samir, one of the threeA forum moderators. He suggested having some of the resident artists and art collectors hold a discussion on Ashley Wood's art. I've been in touch with several people, and the idea is still in the works. Unfortunately, they're spread all over the globe, so finding a time that works for all of them has proven to be difficult.

Do you plan on Doing a live podcast for the next 3A event?
For episode 3, Chas, Yama, Solodice and I did a live recording during the Heavy Bramble drop, and it was a blast! I'd like to do something like that in the future, but with more participants. The energy generated by drop-nights is an amazing thing, and it's kick-ass to have the chance to capture it for the podcast. I'm not going to be able to do it for the TK Baka drop, but after that, I'd love to do it again.

If there's one thing you want people to come away from with this what would it be?
An awareness that they are part of large community of like-minded, really cool folks from all over the world.

Episode 2 of the ThreeARadio Podcast is now online. Thanks to all of the folks who have contributed with design work, music suggestions, audio submissions and online discussion.

In this episode, I take a look at the book World War Robot, which features art by Ashley Wood and writing by Ashley Wood and T.P. Louis. The book is actually not a ThreeA publication, but since a huge amount of ThreeA toy ideas come from the book, I figured it was worth looking into.

This episode clocks in at over 2 hours long, and that's AFTER extensive editing. Much of the material cut from this episode was too good to discard, so it is being incorporated into episode 3.

Welcome to the first episode of the ThreeARadio podcast. This podcast is a work in progress, and will eventually evolve to follow a set format, but for this first episode, I chose to give some general background on the world of ThreeA toys and to introduce some of the fans of ThreeA.

Spent quite a few hours editing today. Fun, but tedious- Turns out I'm only about a purple-belt in Audacity.

But I'm a tenacious f*cker, and I managed to plug away until I found a way to make the program do what I wanted. Things are coming together nicely; still on schedule for the show to drop this Sunday. Only question now is whether to hold out for one final piece of audio, or polish it up as it is now.

This is pretty much an experiment. Many podcasts out there are 'niche-podcasts', but I'm not aware of many that are as 'niche-y' as a podcast dedicated to the toys, apparel, and art of Ashley wood.

Hell; I'm not even sure if I WANT to know about other uber-niche podcasts.

Anyway; my big toe has now been dipped into the podcasting sea. Here's hoping that there isn't a freaky undertow waiting to sweep me away....
